Botox has revolutionized the way we treat dynamic wrinkles and has replaced many traditional surgical approaches to facial aging. It is an extremely safe treatment, and in the right hands, produces beautiful, natural-appearing results. Botox is also used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, or extensive sweating of the axilla, hands and feet. We believe that giving botox injections is both an art form and a science.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is particularly useful for eliminating unwanted facial expression lines, such as the vertical “frown line” between the eyebrows. It’s also a superb treatment for horizontal lines on the forehead, “smile” or “crow’s feet” lines around the eyes, vertical lines on the upper lip and the downturned corners of the mouth.

A small amount of Botox is injected directly into the muscle, which decreases the muscle contraction and thus the repeated creasing of the skin, which causes the lines.

Our board-certified dermatologists have a deep understanding of human anatomy and can readily visualize facial muscles to make these injections very safe. The effects from Botox are noticeable after five days and peak after two weeks. Gradually, over a period of three to five months, the Botox wears off, and the muscles will regain their function. Treatment is repeated as needed. Care is taken to not overtreat to maintain a natural, healthy appearance.

Candidates for Botox Treatment

You may be a candidate for a Botox if you are beginning to notice lines and wrinkles on your face — specifically, smile lines, crows feet, frown lines or forehead lines. If you notice these lines gradually increasing, consider talking with one of our physicians at Surgical Dermatology Group. They can assess your skin and determine if Botox is the appropriate solution for you.

Botox Procedure

Botox is a safe and quick procedure. Your physician will discuss your goals and evaluate your personal needs. After you agree on a plan, the treatment itself generally doesn’t take more than 15 minutes.

The majority of our patients tolerate Botox exceptionally well and don’t experience much pain from the injections. Our team can apply a topical numbing cream if you would like; however, most patients do not need this additional step.
