Incredible healthcare starts with rigorous training and education. All of our doctors are board certified dermatologists. Surgeons at SDG are also fellowship trained to perform Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), a highly specialised surgical technique performed to treat complex skin cancers. SDG offers a coveted Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship. Training the next generation of dermatologic surgeons is an honor.

Jonathan Cappel, MD
Dr. Cappel attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he graduated with a degree in bio¬medical engineering. He then attended Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where Dr. Cappel completed his internship in inter¬nal medicine and his dermatology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During his dermatology residency, he received the Mayo International Health Program Scholarship and spent one month working in dermatology in São Paulo, Brazil. Additionally, he was involved in multiple research projects regarding a number of different dermatologic conditions and as a result, he has attended and presented research at numerous dermatology meetings.
Dr. Cappel completed a Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship with Surgical Der¬matology Group, where he received advanced train¬ing in the management of skin cancer with the Mohs micrographic surgery technique.
He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatol¬ogy, the American College of Mohs Surgery, and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. In his free time, Dr. Cappel enjoys spending time outdoors with family and his dog Abbie, traveling, and being physically active. He additionally has also traveled to the Amazon region of Peru as well as other South American counties for several medical mission trips. He is now accepting new patients in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
Brian King, MD
Dr. Brian King is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon. He completed his residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and excelled in medical, pediatric, surgical, and procedural dermatology. During his Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship with Surgical Dermatology Group, Dr. King received advanced training in the management of skin cancer with the Mohs micrographic surgery technique.
Prior to his dermatologic training, Dr. King graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Cornell College. He received his medical doctorate with research distinction and many coursework honors at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He then completed his transitional internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Advancing the field of dermatology through research is important to Dr. King. He has published peer-reviewed articles in both medical and surgical dermatology. He has presented his research findings at national and international conferences. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
Outside of the office, Dr. King enjoys spending time with his wife, four children, and two dogs. He has a passion for community involvement and has volunteered for many organizations including Church of the Highlands, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Children’s Cancer Connection, and the Out of the Sun Run. He enjoys an active lifestyle and is an enthusiastic football fan.
Dr. King is currently accepting new patients in general, surgical, pediatric, and cosmetic dermatology.
Leonard Terry Pynes, MD, FAAD
Dr. Pynes was born in Dothan, Alabama, and has spent most of his life in Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama. He then received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the College of Medicine of the University of South Alabama. Dr. Pynes completed residencies in both internal medicine and dermatology in Birmingham Alabama. He is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Dermatology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. In 1984 he opened Dermatology Associates of Dothan and has maintained that practice to the present. Dr. Pynes has opened satellite offices in Enterprise AL, Troy AL, and Eufaula AL. He is assisted in these south Alabama offices by a full-time physician and a full-time physician assistant. We will add a full-time nurse practitioner in Dothan in June 2018. Also, several other dermatologists from Surgical Dermatology Group (with offices also in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Montgomery) are in the Dothan office 1-2 days per week performing Mohs surgery. Over time, his practice has included several aspects of dermatology, but he now limits his practice to general dermatology and skin cancer treatment.
In the summer of 2017, Dr. Pynes and his wife Tina built a house in Owens Cross Roads near Huntsville to be closer to grandchildren. When he decided to move to this location, he decided to open a dermatology office in Huntsville also. This practice is Huntsville Dermatology. For a while, he will work in both Huntsville and Dothan. The Huntsville Dermatology hours will at first be Thursday and Friday, but he hopes to expand those hours soon. He will add a full-time dermatology-trained Nurse Practitioner to Huntsville Dermatology in December.
Memberships Include the American Academy of Dermatology, Alabama Dermatology Society, American Medical Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Florida Medical Association, Madison County Medical Society, pending, and Houston County Medical Society.
John Wuennenberg, MD
Dr. John Wuennenberg completed his undergraduate degree at University of Missouri-Columbia with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Biology. He went on to Medical School at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. After his graduation, he finished his internship at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO in Internal Medicine. From there, he completed his residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia in Dermatology. He fulfilled his Edward A. Krull Cutaneous Oncology Fellowship training at the Henry Ford Health System Dermatology Center.
Additionally, Dr. Wuennenberg was involved in multiple research projects where he analyzed data and studied patients. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Missouri Dermatologic Society, Michigan State Medical Society, American Contact Dermatitis Society, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Wuennenberg's volunteer activities range from grooming thoroughbred horses to providing primary care during medical missions to providing monthly health screenings for underserved & uninsured populations. He enjoys spending time in Michigan with his family, competing in amateur golf tournaments, and following thoroughbred horse racing. He is now accepting new patients in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
William Farmer, MD
Dr. William Farmer received his bachelor’s degree in both biology and business administration from the University of Richmond. He went on to earn his medical degree from Georgetown University School of medicine and his Internal Medicine Prelim from the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was Chief Resident in Dermatology at West Virginia University.
Dr. Farmer has written multiple publications about various dermatologic conditions. From serving at soup kitchens to journalism and social media marketing, Dr. Farmer likes volunteering in his spare time. He enjoys scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, designing craft beers, and hiking the Great Walks in New Zealand and the Alps in Bavaria. He is now accepting new patients in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
Joshua Eickstaedt, MD
Dr. Eickstaedt attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he graduated with honors in biochemistry. He earned his medical doctorate at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2008.
Dr. Eickstaedt completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He then worked as a Hospitalist for several years, and also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he was chosen to serve on the Division of Hospital Medicine executive and personnel committees. During his time at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Eickstaedt developed an affinity for dermatology, which prompted him to return to residency in Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He has published several scientific articles, and continues to be involved in multiple research projects, served as Chief Resident, and was elected to the Mohs subcommittee of the American Academy of Dermatology.
He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. In his free time, Dr. Eickstaedt enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and friends. He likes outdoor activities, follows several collegiate and professional sports teams, and looks forward to game day. He is currently accepting patients in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.
Malia Downing, MD
Dr. Downing received her undergraduate degree at the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, MN where she played collegiate soccer and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She was awarded her medical doctorate from the University of North Dakota, graduating second in her class. She then did her medical internship and dermatology residency at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, KS. Dr. Downing will be completing a fellowship in cosmetic surgery followed by a fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology with Surgical Dermatology Group.
During medical school and residency, Dr. Downing published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and presented at national conferences. She also regularly volunteered at the KC Health Center, providing dermatologic care to uninsured patients. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. In her free time, Dr. Downing enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her family.
